Leila trotted to keep up with Warren’s long strides as they fled the cellars, a heavy silence clogging the air around them. She understood the importance of getting back to the drawing room before they were discovered missing, but had a damnable time making her legs function properly. Warren practically dragged her along, his hold on her hand unrelenting. His own hand trembled, and she realized he was as anxious as she was.

It had been difficult to leave Mary Ann behind, but she held firm to Warren’s promise that they wouldn’t abandon her. He’d told her he had a plan and had yet to go back on his word. Hope that her friend would soon be free welled in her chest, and gave her the fortitude to press on.

Meanwhile, her head spun from the Warren’s revelation in the cellar. She’d had her suspicions, but doubt had overshadowed her assumption. Leila had wondered if she had mistaken that penmanship of the letter in his study, perhaps seeing things that weren’t truly there. If Warren worked for her father, surely this business concerning Prince Matthias wasn’t sanctioned by him. The notion that her father would meddle in the affairs of another kingdom seemed out of character.

Now, she had her proof. The man had said it with his own mouth. He was a spy, an officer working under the orders of the King of Cardenas. His mission had been to rescue Mary Ann, but he’d told Leila that he’d lived in Hanov for years, serving on the council. It stood to reason that her father had placed him there—though for what purpose, she could not determine. Could it be that his loyalties were now split, and his machinations concerning the crown prince had him acting on his own impulses?

There was no time to think of that now. The long corridor stretched before them, the dull buzz of the party emanating at them through the walls. There was no sash on the drawing room door, so they slipped quickly inside, finding Prince Matthias pacing before the hearth. He stumbled to a halt as Warren slammed the door behind them, and Leila rushed to the couch, throwing herself down to take up her role as distressed lady once more.

“Christ, that felt like an infernally long time,” he said in a rush, glancing at the clock on the mantel. “But it couldn’t have been more than half an hour. I thought I was going to be sick.”

“We returned as quickly as we could,” Warren replied, hands clenched behind his back as he resumed pacing where the prince had left off. “Did anyone come while we were gone?”

“Only the footman. He knocked, but I did not allow him in. Shaw wanted a report on Mirela’s welfare, and I told him she had regained consciousness but was resting. Did you … did you find the lady?”

Warren nodded, his body fairly vibrating with rage. “We did, and she is in a poor state. Shaw has her caged like an animal down there.
